hmm.....
*wonders how to put this*
well... i studied animation for a while... so... it's difficult for me to accept 'uggly' because... the first season was so brilliantly animated
in fact, it’s what kick-started my obsession (with animation) in the first place XD
this is my understanding of the change:
in 2002, Mitsubishi sold the rights for the animation to the Canadian company Nelvana (also did CardCaptors). Though this was in August, only a couple of months before it first aired in October, Japan, I think it’s still safe to presume this was the main reason.
Argue all you want, but the sole reason behind beyblade is marketing (just like pokemon, yu gi-oh, digimon etc.). The first season was aimed for a Japanese audience, and a Japanese audience alone. The style of the first animation fitted a lot of well know, and well loved animations that had come before hand, like Detective Conan. However, with this change of audience (for which I can imagine discussions took place for over a good length of time), a change in style would be needed.
The ‘new’ style that was adopted is a lot more accessible to a somewhat ‘closed minded’ western culture. On top of that, the introduction of CGI meant that the episodes could be created and aired over a much better time ratio.
This would mean that it would be much easier for Nelvana to make it’s necessary changes, and not loose too much time in waiting for it to be animated.
They are different, and I do think that many people prefer the ‘new’ style to the ‘old’, however, I’m pretty sure that was the point.
Also – with American sponsorship, the budget could be increased greatly.
And looking at dates, it seems the manga came after the anime, or… about the same time. My understanding for this is that, like pokemon, many children (and I’m sure most parents too) like to have a manga to accompany an anime. It is, however, always nice to have differences, so that one doesn’t spoil it for the other (especially when they’re being released on the same time scale).
*yawns* ok, I think that’ll just about do it ^^;
XD
O, one more thing - as you can imagine there was an extremely large amounts of complaints about the change - especially over Kai's appearance, which is why i think they went for a further change in season 3, though I'm sure they would have changed again anyway (because a change in wardrobe means you've gotten older *nods* XD)
LOVE THE CHEESE!
but not to the degree that it goes off >.<
