Season One: The Ugliest Season Ever?

Postby Flyinglilypad on Sun Jan 06, 2008 6:23 am

While season was most of us's first seasons, some of us's only season, and perhaps the best season, it remains that it may have been the ugliest one.

Most of the characters were much less smooth than in later season. Some of them were still cute. But Tyson...he was sick. The poor guy's looks made me want to throw up.

Max was alright, even if his clothes drove me crazy.

Kai was buff, and not too bad looking at all.

Kenny was adorable and nerdy as usual.

Rei looked good but he looks the best of all in the later seasons.

In my opinion, most of the bladers were better looking in G-rev. Thoughts on this? Opions? Insults to the Lily?

*insults lily*
kidding.
Nah yeah season 1 WAS kinda ugly in my opinion...I heard that season was hand-drawn, not like V-Force, which was CG.
Of course not everything is...I don't know how to call it without sounding kinda vulgar. Well attractiveness is not all that matters. I love season one because it was the "beginning" it got me into beyblade and stuff. It also I guess I sound retarded but it had heart. It was more about making friends and having fun about beyblading and traveling around the globe than actually WINNING the match. *shrugs*

Although yeah...Tyson looks awesome in G-Rev. He is actually drool-ful by then.

Which makes me think...at first Beyblade was 100% shonen anime. If you notice shonen anime don't always have main characters that are attractive- because the audience -guys- don't care about the male lead's looks. (In most cases) That's left to shojo to satisfy us hormone-ful girls.
By G-Rev, I'm guessing the people working in BB Project 3 had already seen that most of the male fans had stopped liking Beyblade and it was just us left- so they shifted to a more shojo-ish stance. And even left yaoi hints, which I personally don't like but that's just KH's opinion and she's going to get shanked.

That was a lot of typing for a sleepy person.

Personally I like and don't like some characters' appearances. For example Tyson... I don't like his outfit in ANY season. Season 1 was the worst though... As for Ray, I like his outfit in Season 1, but not in V-Force of G-Rev. But that's enough about that.

What do you guys think about how they pulled off the actual beyblades? I loved Season 1 for having them drawn. When they changed to 3D blades I was like "...what the-?! noooo!!" Seriously. They looked stupid in the middle of drawn out characters and surroundings. Pfft. *loves drawn beyblades*

yeah I like how the 'blades are drawn by hand in the first season. the only thing that bothers me is the monochromatic bit-beasts ^^; blargh

Season's changing

Postby Blitzer on Tue Jan 08, 2008 10:31 am

Well...i do admit...1st season is kinda ugly...

I mean..1st they are chubby..hect even Kai looks...rounded! even those skinny ones look fat...

The 2nd season made them shrink and chibified...Kai looked cute! And he was more feminine...(shudder) Tyson looked so so while the others just got cuter

3rd time's the charm and they overdid with the cute and the bulky...Kai was manly and Tyson finally looked like a bishounen..i think only Rei looked so different since his ears were spiky..

hmm.....
*wonders how to put this*
well... i studied animation for a while... so... it's difficult for me to accept 'uggly' because... the first season was so brilliantly animated
in fact, it’s what kick-started my obsession (with animation) in the first place XD

this is my understanding of the change:

in 2002, Mitsubishi sold the rights for the animation to the Canadian company Nelvana (also did CardCaptors). Though this was in August, only a couple of months before it first aired in October, Japan, I think it’s still safe to presume this was the main reason.
Argue all you want, but the sole reason behind beyblade is marketing (just like pokemon, yu gi-oh, digimon etc.). The first season was aimed for a Japanese audience, and a Japanese audience alone. The style of the first animation fitted a lot of well know, and well loved animations that had come before hand, like Detective Conan. However, with this change of audience (for which I can imagine discussions took place for over a good length of time), a change in style would be needed.
The ‘new’ style that was adopted is a lot more accessible to a somewhat ‘closed minded’ western culture. On top of that, the introduction of CGI meant that the episodes could be created and aired over a much better time ratio.
This would mean that it would be much easier for Nelvana to make it’s necessary changes, and not loose too much time in waiting for it to be animated.

They are different, and I do think that many people prefer the ‘new’ style to the ‘old’, however, I’m pretty sure that was the point.
Also – with American sponsorship, the budget could be increased greatly.
And looking at dates, it seems the manga came after the anime, or… about the same time. My understanding for this is that, like pokemon, many children (and I’m sure most parents too) like to have a manga to accompany an anime. It is, however, always nice to have differences, so that one doesn’t spoil it for the other (especially when they’re being released on the same time scale).

*yawns* ok, I think that’ll just about do it ^^;
XD

O, one more thing - as you can imagine there was an extremely large amounts of complaints about the change - especially over Kai's appearance, which is why i think they went for a further change in season 3, though I'm sure they would have changed again anyway (because a change in wardrobe means you've gotten older *nods* XD)

Yes, season one was definitely the best in content & storyline for me. I liked the handrawn beyblades better as well.

And I agree with shounen/shoujo theory. Girls like to look at pretty stuff ^_^ So do guys if they're looking for a girl. I would have targeted it at shounen-minded girls to begin with.

WTF is up with Season 3 Rei's ears? He looks like fsking elf or a demon or something. Anyone know what the heck is up with that?

yeah.
sometimes his ears are pointed and his teeth/fangs get longer...

i think it's to show how close Rei is to his bitbeast... because he's always had some form of resemblance to a cat, then in the 3 season he's got the ears permanently... which... well, as far as i'm concerned means that he has a permanent connecting to drigger.

its ok...so before everything goes totally random, there are points which i like about Season 1...mainly since it's the main intro of the characters ^^

*nods*
i think the general story lines of the first one are amongst the best. there's a lot of character development that doesn't feel forced in any way..

beat me for saying it but... the development in the later seasons kinda feel a little like 'we gotta do something deep now, lets shove this in'
they work! don't get me wrong... but it's always the case that in the original series of something the general plot is thought up for that season, and most of the ideas are used there and then... because in the first season you've no idea if the network is gunna let you do another...

*sigh, i dunno if any of that made any sense ^^;
